No-Carry Zones

Thanks again for reading the blog.

This topic will be about no carry zones. Let me first start by saying that some zones are givens. Schools, hospitals, Federal Buildings or Military Installations. The ability to now ban guns based on you're own whim is not only ridiculous, but dangerous. It lets all criminally minded individuals know that the area they want to conduct their criminal activities in has been conveniently disarmed for them. People who have the proper licensing in Ohio (and all states that have reciprocity) have been trained and had background checks run on them to ensure they can handle the responsibility. Its no small surprise that areas in which firearms are illegal and carrying them is forbidden that crime is much higher and on the rise than areas in Mid-West US. I have made it one of my personal rules to avoid places that post signs that prohibit firearms. To me this sign broadcasts that people here in this building are unarmed and unwilling to protect themselves.

I think that its advantageous for businesses to allow people to carry and I'll tell you why. With the US economy in some of the worst condition its being in since the late 1920's people are resorting more and more to crime; petty theft to armed robbery. Good businesses and people are the victims of this crime. Another result of the economy especially in Cincinnati, Ohio (my hometown) police officers have been laid off leaving more areas of concern not patrolled at all or with large gaps of time between patrols. Most districts have promoted Concealed Carry as a great option for people to protect themselves and property; because frankly police are unable to maintain a presence like they use to and respond as quickly.

CCW holders and civilians are not police officers! Let me clear that up right away, but as a citizen you not only have right, but a responsibility to help someone who is hurt or being attacked or threatened. Obviously you always have to option to be a great witness and not get involved, but if a criminal is robbing a person or business with a firearm and threatening to kill people you are authorized to use deadly force. I hope no one is ever put in this position, but I am realistic. I am a firm believer in "Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness" if some criminal wants to take those things from me with violence he will loose.

College Campuses have anti-concealed carry. I have been reading a lot on colleges who allow lawful concealed carry and none of them have had missing or stolen guns, misfires, or disputes that ended in a hail of bullets. After instances like NIU and VT legal concealed carry should be a no brainier.

This article is very enlightening- (http://www.soderstrome.com/2010/08/24/gun-free-campuses-endanger-students/)

**I am not saying everyone needs a gun, because there are people out there who cannot own a firearm due to mental or physical disabilities, also people who are criminally ineligible due to choices they made in the past.**

Conceal Carry vs. Reckless Carry

Conceal Carry vs. Reckless Carry

We have all been there, a mall, a grocery store, walking down the street and seen it. Someone who is “concealed carrying”, but open carrying. It can be awkward and even dangerous. I have talked with people in this situation in many different venues and gotten many different points of view, but I want to set the record straight. Concealed Carry is just that “concealed”. I have seen guys opening carrying before like they are John Wayne. It doesn’t make you look cool or sexy it makes you look like an idiot. The reasons people carry are numerous, but the most prevalent is for protection. Most people carry to protect themselves against a criminal trying to harm them; whatever the reason you carry concealed it is advantageous that you keep concealment so a criminal or other people in general don’t know you are carrying a firearm. Appearing to be another defenseless citizen amongst the thousands of unarmed Americans walking down the street or residing in your home is a tactical edge. If you are consistently broadcasting you have a firearm you will make yourself a target. If there is a violent criminal in a public setting and he or she wants to do harm to others you will be their first target because you are armed. If someone is looking for a residence to burglarize they may choose one they know has guns because they want to steal them. Some may disagree and say well the criminal would skip my house for fear of being shot. That has some validity to it, but that depends on you being awake and being able to retrieve you’re firearm before a criminal reaches you.

Open carry is a right in my opinion, but one that shouldn’t be abused and requires constant vigilance on the carrier. As I said previously open carrying does make you a target. Take this picture. This guy is open carrying in a restaurant, but he isn’t paying attention, his holster appears to be a fobus with no retention other than friction and it’s sticking way out behind him. This picture makes me laugh. I could walk right by him to pay my bill and pull his gun right out and have it in his back. This is what I call reckless carry.

If you must open carry which I admit there are some scenarios where it’s better; you need to use a safe and reliable holster. The Serpa line from Blackhawk uses a very design where you have to press a button to release the weapon from the holster. For outside the waistband I recommend this holster series or and level 2+ retention systems from Galco.

Open carry is legal in most states and people claim that it incites panic, but no cop is going to come after for that unless you are being dumb, but in all reality there is no reason to be open carrying. There are no advantages only dangers to you and those around you. Gun control at the personal level is extremely important. Showboating is not acceptable with firearms. When you have the power to take a life you can’t afford to be showing off.
